Midtown Manhattan

Many of New York's offices and jobs are in Midtown. So are (Как и ) many of its famous skyscrapers.

New York's first skyscraper was the Flatiron Building, built in 1902. Twenty stories high, it towered over the other buildings of its time.

The first building boom for skyscrapers came in the late 1920s (двадцатые годы). These skyscrapers were done in art deco style. The most beautiful and famous of the art deco skyscrapes are the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building. You can't go to the top of the Chrysler Building, but you can admire it from many different points in the city. You can, however, go to the top of the Empire State Builing, the third tallest (по высоте) building in the world. The Empire State Building has become (прошедшее время) not only a symbol of New York but also part of its history - both real, as when a plane crashed into it in 1945, and fictional, as when King Kong clung to it in the 1933 movie.

Rockefeller Center , built (построенный) in the 1930s, is the world's largest (самый) privately owned business and entertainment centre. Its nineteen buildings include the monumental RCA Building and Radio City Music Hall.

In the 1950s, there was a second building boom, featuring (отличающийся) a new style. The United Nations Building was the first glass curtain wall skyscraper.

The Seagram Building, with its metal and its smoky glass, is another early example. The style became very popular.

When you are in Midtown, you can look at more than (большее, чем) architecture. Fifth Avenue has stores that are among the world's most expensive - Cartier, Gucci, Tiffany's and so on. They are great for window-shopping.

Perhaps nowhere are New York's extreme contrasts more obvious than (более ... , чем) in the Times Square area, around 42nd Street and Broadway.

Times Square is named after the New York Times, which for years had its headquarters there. The New York Times is among the best newspapers in the country. New York's other main papers, the New York Daily News, the New York Post, and New York Newsday.

Times Square is the beginning of the theatre district - the area where Broadway plays are performed. Most "Broadway" theatres are located east or west of (к ... от) Broadway on streets in the 40s and 50s. Broadway has long been the centre of theatre in the United States.

In addition to Broadway there are Off-Broad-way and Off-Off-Broadway theatres. Most of (большинство из) these theatres are in the Village and the East Village.
